The stage orchestra is one of the two large orchestral collectives at the Vienna State Opera: it has its roots in the 19th century - originally as the orchestra of the Vienna Burgtheater - and performs the so-called "stage music" in countless operatic works: the musicians are therefore used when music is not needed in the pit, but on stage as part of the action.
Since last season, the stage orchestra has had another task: it is the orchestra in NEST and is entrusted with a wide variety of musical tasks - be it the world premiere of the children's opera Sagt der Walfisch zum Thunfisch, the world premiere of Lee Miller in Hitler's Bathtub, the premiere of Consistent Fantasy is Reality or as a partner in the piece development projects of the Vienna State Opera's Education & Outreach department.
