NESTKLANG

The stage orchestra is one of the two large orchestral collectives at the Vienna State Opera: it has its roots in the 19th century - originally as the orchestra of the Vienna Burgtheater - and performs the so-called "stage music" in countless operatic works: In other words, the musicians are used when music is not needed in the pit, but on stage as part of the action.

Since last season, the stage orchestra has had another task: it is the orchestra in NEST and is entrusted with a wide variety of musical tasks - be it the world premiere of the children's opera Sagt der Walfisch zum Thunfisch, the world premiere of Lee Miller in Hitler's Bathhub, the premiere of Consistent Fantasy is Reality or as a partner in the piece development projects of the Vienna State Opera's Education & Outreach department.

After just one NEST season, the orchestra has become indispensable as the musical backbone of this new house. Reason enough to invite the members out of the pit and onto the stage: In various constellations, the musicians will create varied and exciting concert programs

For Nestklang on April 15, 2026, the stage orchestra will join forces with the Opera Studio of the Vienna State Opera for a joint concert.
