David Bösch
The German stage director David Bösch studied at the Zurich University of the Arts. Following his debut with Romeo and Juliet at the Schauspielhaus Bochum, he worked for several years at the Schauspiel Essen and in Bochum. From 2013 to 2016 he served as resident director at Vienna’s Burgtheater and has since worked at the Residenztheater Munich, Schauspielhaus Zürich, Deutsches Theater Berlin, and Thalia Theater Hamburg. Since the 2024/25 season, he has been Director of Drama at the Landestheater Linz.
His career as an opera director began in 2009 at the Bavarian State Opera with Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore. He subsequently staged productions at leading international opera houses, including the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Dutch National Opera, Berlin State Opera, Semperoper Dresden, and the Opéra National de Lyon, as well as at the Salzburg Festival.
In recent years, he has increasingly turned his attention to young audiences, staging productions both on analogue and digital stages, including Gordon Kampe’s Spring doch at the Bavarian State Opera and Die weiße Rose at the Hamburg State Opera in collaboration with ZDF and arte. In 2023, Grigori Frid’s The Diary of Anne Frank was presented in Hamburg as a Graphic Opera.
As a playwright, David Bösch has created several works, including Robin Hood and Keine Pinguine, nirgends, which was performed at the Staatstheater Nürnberg. For Much Ado About Nothing he received the Young Directors Award at the Salzburg Festival in 2006. In 2019, David Bösch was appointed Professor of Directing at the Max Reinhardt Seminar.
