Jean Teitgen

The French bass Jean Teitgen is acclaimed for his musical intelligence and striking stage presence—qualities that have made him a sought-after interpreter of profound and psychologically complex roles.

Among his most distinguished performances are his portrayals of Arkel, most recently acclaimed in a new production at the Opéra national de Paris, and the tyrannical Gessler (Guillaume Tell), with which he made his debut at the Vienna State Opera.

While initially focusing on bel canto and French lyric repertoire, he has gradually turned to darker and more dramatic roles, including Banquo, Alvise (La Gioconda), Fiesco, and most recently Daland, marking his Wagner debut at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse.

As Claudius, King of Denmark, in Ambroise Thomas’s Hamlet, Teitgen made his debut at the Salzburg Festival and went on to achieve further success as Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) and Luther/Crespel (Les Contes d’Hoffmann).
