Kwangchul Youn

Korean bass Kwangchul Youn is one of the leading vocal artists on the international opera and concert stage.

In the 2024/25 season, he appeared as King Marke in Tristan und Isolde at San Francisco Opera, as Fasolt in a new production of Das Rheingold at the Opéra de Paris, and took on one of his signature roles, Gurnemanz in Parsifal, at the Hamburg State Opera.

In recent years, he has sung at all of the world’s most renowned opera houses, including in Vienna, London, Berlin, Milan, Munich, Dresden, Paris, Barcelona, Turin, New York, Chicago, and Houston. He has also appeared at the Bayreuth and Salzburg Festivals, the Salzburg Easter Festival, and the Tongyeong Festival.

Career highlights include Gurnemanz and King Heinrich in new productions at the Opéra de Paris, Gurnemanz at the Vienna State Opera, the Comte des Grieux in Manon at the Metropolitan Opera, Abimélech in a new production of Samson et Dalila at the Berlin State Opera, Ramfis in Aida at the Liceu in Barcelona, as well as Daland in a new production of Der fliegende Holländer and the Landgrave in Tannhäuser in Hamburg.

He is also in high demand as an interpreter of Sarastro, most recently at San Francisco Opera.
